We’re unsure what we’d consider a bigger commitment; taking the plunge and getting married or finally deciding to get a bob haircut… No, but all jokes aside, deciding to throw away years of growth with one giant snip is hella scary. Because at the end of the day, there’s no going back, and until you cut it all off, it’s hard to determine whether a bob would suit your face shape. Well, that was until we heard about the hack coined by hair-Gods at John Frieda that’ll finally reveal if a bob haircut will flatter your face shape in under 30 seconds. All you need is a pencil and a ruler…

When we heard about the hack it made total sense; it’s all about the proportions and dimensions of your face shape and how they work in harmony with the angles of your new ‘do. This particular trick is to do with the angle of your jaw.
Here’s how to work out if a new short ‘do is for you:
We advise doing this in front of a mirror. Start by holding a pencil horizontally along the tip of your chin, then hold a ruler vertically from the bottom of your earlobe. Where the pencil and ruler meet, they should create a right angle. Measure the intersection where the two tools meet: If the pencil hits the ruler at 2.25 inches or less, you can totally slay a bob. On the other hand, if it’s more than 2.25 inches then it’s probably not the most flattering cut out there for you – if you still want to go short, try a slightly longer lob, like Selena or Olivia Culpo. Of course, there are exceptions, but this is a good general indicator.

Why facial dimensions are SO important…
Celebrity hairstylist Eduardo Bravo says the aim of any haircut is to make your face appear more oval, “Of course, we’re all beautiful in our own unique way, and you shouldn’t worry if you don’t have an oval face shape. However, the reason why the ‘oval’ is considered the most appealing to the eye is because of the Greek Golden Ratio of Beauty Phi, which for thousands of years was thought to hold the secret formula of ‘perfection.’ The Greeks discovered that the ratio occurs everywhere in nature, therefore used the formula to find the ‘aesthetically perfect.” So, if a bob will do that, then you’re in luck, and if not, well, maybe put the scissors down.
